Step 5 Register to Re-plant Sumatra
Fact
Sumatra has lost more than 81% of its rainforest since 1980, habitat that is home to the last 6,300 critically endangered Sumatra orangutans. The remaining forests are isolated and fragile, and offer orangutans little protection from further development.

Every year, deforestation, hunting and illegal trade push orangutans closer to extinction. If we don't ACT NOW orangutans will soon vanish forever.
Orangutans fight for survival against the relentless spread of deforestation, mainly to clear land for oil palm plantations. When rainforests are destroyed, orangutans are easy prey for poachers, who kill the adults for meat and capture the babies to sell into the illegal wildlife trade.
Now, the United Nations’ Great Apes Survival Partnership (GRASP) is teaming up with International Animal Rescue (IAR) and football star Carles Puyol to raise awareness and funds on behalf of orangutans. If we ACT NOW, it might not be too late.

Fact
International Animal Rescue cares for more than 40 orphaned orangutans at an emergency centre in Borneo, most of who would have died due to injuries and neglect. But dedicated staff and diligent support ensures these orangutans might one day have a chance to return to the wild.

Fact
Palm oil is used to manufacture lipstick, paint, chocolate, shampoo, margarine, soap and hundreds of other household items. But the rapid growth of oil palm plantations in Borneo and Sumatra – where deforestation occurs at a faster rate than anywhere else in the world – has devastated the orangutan’s natural habitat.
