Welcome to the Agape Community Center

Agape Community Center is a leading non-profit organization serving the northwest side of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Agape Community Center has been a beacon of hope, determination, support and success for thousands of area residents since 1986.  As a community center, Agape has the unique advantage of welcoming youth, adults, families and seniors into its facility through a broad range of educational, social, recreational, cultural, health and life-long learning opportunities.

Agape Community Center has been active in community and neighborhood development for the past seven years. Strong families and strong neighborhoods go hand-in-hand.  Each depends on trust, support, stability, and a sense of connection.  Agape Community Center is committed to making Milwaukee's Northwest Side a place with vibrant neighborhoods where people want to live.

Celebrating 30 Years of Commitment to Milwaukee's Northwest Side Neighborhoods

Agape Community Center owes its start to the thoughtful vision and the financial support of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother. Several Sisters living in the neighborhood learned that too many area families regularly subsisted on meals of bread and cereal.

Working with area churches, they began serving community meals in November 1986.  Since that time, Agape has grown into a vital community resource offering services, activities and programs to nearly 25,000 neighbors.

Affiliation

Agape Community Center is a subsidiary of Ministry Health Care, a leading network of hospitals, clinics and many other health-oriented organizations in Wisconsin and Minnesota.  Both Agape and Ministry are sponsored by the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother.

Background
Agape is a Greek word with two meanings. It signifies a communal meal. On a deeper level, the term relates to an unselfish love of one person for another.  Although Agape's programs and services are available to all Milwaukee County residents, our focus is our service area in the northwest side of Milwaukee.

Together, We Make It Happen
Agape Community Center helps community members maintain and improve their quality of life.

Agape Community Center provides an extensive list of services. With many area families falling below the poverty level, these services provide critical support to area families. We offer a year-round, safe haven with structured educational opportunities for youth. We offer support, resources, family events, and networking for adults. We offer neighborhood revitalization support for the greater service area. Over the past 28 years, we have been gratified by the hundreds of youth and families who, with the support of a compassionate community, have moved beyond the threshold of struggle. In 2012 alone:

  • 14,826 guests were served 23,868 community meals
  • 158,400 pounds of non-perishable food was distributed to 3,960 low income families
  • 1573 volunteers contributed 5,243 hours to serving community meals
  • 432 Thanksgiving/Holiday turkeys were disseminated to our low income neighbors
  • 1,400 visits to the Center were made by older adults
  • 35 neighborhood and civic functions drew 2,606 people
  • 1185 lunches were were served to families, children, and adults from the Summer Lunch Program
